The 16th district of Vienna, Ottakring, occupies a slim strip lying north-west of the city centre (Innere Stadt). Once a byword for grand old town houses, today housing conditions are quite poor as many apartments still lack the basic essential amenities. Traditionally a lower income area like neighbouring Rudolfsheim-Fnfhaus, Ottakring now has one of the biggest immigrant populations in Vienna. Up on the hills a number of beautiful old villas and palaces still inspire wonder such as the Schlo Wilhelminenberg and Villa Aurora. There is a long tradition of manufacturing and industrial production in Ottakring where such local companies as the Ottakringer Brewery, the Frnkranz textile factory and food company Meinl have headquarters alongside the offices of international companies such as Gerot and Kwizda. The U3 and U6 underground lines, and the S45 suburban railway make up Ottakrings main transport axes.
