Vienna Staatsoper: Historic opera house offers free performances streaming until 24 November

One of the world’s best opera venues, often uttered in the same breath as La Scala or The Met,  offers daily performances featuring the top stars of the opera world.  

However, due to the current regulation of the Austrian government, all performances were cancelled up to and including December 6, 2020.  But now, the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) has announced a program of streaming broadcasts from November 17 to 24, which highlights the works of Richard Strauss.  

Among them, the historical recording of the Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) under the musical direction of Carlos Kleiber in 1994.  For those who missed the relaunch of the legendary production of Elektra under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst last September, there is now the possibility to watch it online.  In addition to the focus on Richard Strauss, there will be a spectacular staging of Les Troyens, Peter Konwitschny's French Don Carlos with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, as well as classics such as Swan Lake, to feed your cultural appetite.  Tickets to such performances can cost up to 300 euros during the regular season.

Streaming is available for free on the website play.wiener-staatsoper.at.  

The start time is always at 19.00, and the broadcasts are available for 24 hours.
