Brigittenau

The 20th district of Vienna, Brigittenau is situated north-east of the centre (Innere Stadt) on the banks of the Danube. Its name is derived from the 17th century chapel dedicated to St Brigitta built in 1650. Colossal changes have taken place in Brigittenau since the late 1980s with the construction of many new housing developments which have increased the population. With some 6,000 apartments recently built here there is an abundance of relatively cheap, functional accommodation though little in the way of intriguing landmarks or historical significance. The Millennium Tower, built in 1999, standing at 202 m, is Austrias tallest building. Brigittenaus main public transport artery is the U6 underground line.
