Neubau, the 7th district of Vienna, like neighbouring Mariahilf flanks the busy shopping street, Mariahilferstrae, which boasts a wide array of chic boutiques, shopping centres and art galleries, many of them in the charming and now refurbished Spittelberg quarter that lies directly west of the main museum quarter in the city centre (Innere Stadt). The district, and Spittelberg in particular, draws on a long and rich tradition of Viennese folk songs many of which hark back to the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the 19th century. Again like Mariahilf, the nightlife in Neubau is the best in the city with plenty of cafes, bars and clubs, a treat for nocturnal types. The refurbished warehouses and town houses now provide much of the districts desirable housing. Neubau is easily accessible via the U3 underground running west-east and the U6 from north to south.
