Floridsdorf

Viennas 21st district, Floridsdorf is one of two districts known by the Viennese as Transdanubien (across the Danube) because of its location on the east bank of the river. This, the second largest district in Vienna, offers a wide choice of relatively inexpensive accommodation on the outskirts of the city. It is ideal for city-dwellers who want a mix of urban life and outdoor pursuits thanks to its close proximity both to the centre (Innere Stadt) and the nearby Niedersterreich countryside. Residential areas include traditional villages, terraced houses and late 19th century maisonettes, as well as extensive modern apartment developments. There are several industrial and manufacturing locations dotted around. The Beethoven memorial site is among the main historical attractions, while light entertainment awaits at the Angelibad beach/swimming pool complex and the Hollywood Megaplex cinema. The U6 underground line and various S-type suburban trains connect Floridsdorf to the centre. An extension of the U1 to Florisdorf should be complete by 2006.
