Jimmy's Hall

28 July-19 Aug. Ken Loach's 2014 film Jimmy's Hall has been adapted to the stage in a lively new Abbey production directed by Graham McLaren.

The singing-and-dancing play is based on the true story of socialist James Gralton, the only Irish person ever deported from the Irish state after his 1930s dance hall brought him into conflict with church leaders and conservative politicians.

Richard Clements plays Jimmy alongside a cast including Bosco Hogan as Fr Sheridan and Lisa Lambe as Oonagh.

The production premiered recently at Carrick-on-Shannon in Leitrim, the west of Ireland county where Gralton's hall once stood before it was shut down by authorities.

Last September the president of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, unveiled a statue in honour of Gralton whose deportation he said was "wrong and indefensible".
