The city of Brussels is to install a contemporary Christmas tree at the Grand-Place this year starting 28 November.
The electronic tree, called Xmas 3, is 24-m high and made of steel. People will be able to climb the structure during the day (at the cost of €4) to get a view of the city. At night the tree becomes the focus of the sound and light display which illuminates not only the tree but also the buildings around the square.
Xmas 3 is part of the Winter Wonders fair in Brussels which includes a Christmas market and a skating rink. There is a St Nicholas parade on 6 Dec with fireworks, an exhibition of replicas of the Chinese terracotta army with a documentary and explanatory illustrations at the Bourse and the annual Christmas concert at Grand-Place on 21 Dec with Les Pastoureaux choir.
