The opening of two important museums and the staging of numerous exclusive exhibitions have led the Netherlands Tourist Board to declare Amsterdam a City of Art in 2009.

The new Hermitage Amsterdam in the 17th-century Amstelhof is set to become the most important branch of the internationally renowned parent museum in St Petersburg when it opens in June. Likewise the re-opening in December of the fully renovated and extended Stedelijk Museum will once again throw open to the public one of the world
