31 August13 September 2005. This years Berliner Festspiele features some of the worlds most renowned musicians and musical ensembles playing at the Berlin Philharmonie. Concerts by the New York Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam as well as the Berlin Philharmonic are on this years bill. They and others will perform a selection of world famous symphonies, opera, choral and commissioned works, continuing the Berliner Festspiele tradition of presenting new and cutting edge music from the classical scene. The festival opened with the London Philharmonic Orchestra performing Sofia Gubaidulina's The Light of the End followed by Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 D minor op. 125. Further highlights include the Iva Bittov, Skampa Quartet foray into Jancek's lively repertoire (6 Sep) and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra presenting works by Alban Berg and Gustav Mahler (13 Sep). Tickets cost 899, festival pass 20-280. Most concerts start at 20.00
