9 Sept-16 Oct 2006. LOpra national de Paris presents Gaetano Donizettis masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), a tragic opera in three acts based on Walter Scotts gothic novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The story of feuding families and mismatched love sees young Lucia secretly in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood. Lucias brother Enrico tricks her into agreeing to marry another for his own political and economic ends, and Edgardo imagines he has been betrayed. The stage is set for one of operas most dramatic mad scenes as Lucia appears before the wedding guests with a bloodied knife in her hand having lost her mind she has murdered her husband on their wedding bed. Lucia is played by Natalie Dessay, with Matthew Polenzani as Edgardo. Other cast members include Salvatore Cordella, Kwangchul Youn, Marie-Thrse Keller and Ludovic Tzier. Musical direction is by Evelino Pid, with staging by Andrei Serban. The libretto is by Salvatore Cammarano and the opera is sung in Italian. Admission 130-5. Performances 9, 22, 25, 28 Sept & 2, 6, 9, 12, 16 Oct at 19.30. Matines 13 & 17 Sept at 14.30.
