30 Aug-10 Sept 2006. The Cit de la Musique hosts this annual jazz fest celebrating Afro-American history and music in the Parc de la Villette in the northeast of Paris. The programme opens with a concert by the legendary Ornette Coleman Quartet (Salle des Concerts, 30 Aug), followed by the Mingus Dynasty (31 Aug), Nguyn L Celebrating Jimi Hendrix (6 Sept), Archie Shepp (6, 8 & 9 Sept) and Gurus Jazzmatazz (9 Sept). As well as concerts, the festival offers master-classes and a Black Cinema Festival screening classic films including Shadows(1959) by John Cassavetes and Black Music, Black Power (1993) by Matthias Sanderson. A Love Supreme by Congolese playwright Emmanuel Dongala with live music from sax player Sbastien Jarousse (31 Aug-9 Sept) and dance with Boris Charmatzs Improvisations accompanied by Saul Williams (5 Sept), Archie Shepp (6 Sept) and Han Bennink (7 Sept) complete the programme.
