21 Sept-5 Nov 2006. Venues across London including the Roundhouse, the Barbican, The Place, Sadlers Wells and the South Bank Centre are hosting Dance Umbrella 2006, the British capitals annual festival of contemporary dance. Opening at the Roundhouse with Merce Cunninghams Ocean (1994), the festival features other revivals and re-workings of modern classics from the 1980s and 1990s, with dance works by Michael Clark, Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker, Stephen Petronio, Krisztina de Chatel and Carlotta Ikeda. As part of the Steve Reich birthday celebrations, the Barbican hosts works by Richard Alston, Akram Khan and de Keersmaeker inspired by Reichs music, while Sadlers Wells has performances by the ground-breaking Forsythe Company, Rosas and The Cholmondeleys & The Featherstonehaughs. Conferences, forums, master-classes and a cinema festival Dance on Screen (The Place, 30 Oct-5 Nov) are held in tandem with Dance Umbrella. The Jerwood Proms Season at Sadlers Wells allows 500 people to watch each performance standing in a specially created promenade pit. Admission 35-15, Jerwood Proms 5 for standing place.
