The number of people who retired in Belgium increased by two per cent in 2011 compared with the previous year to reach a total of 34,000.

There are now nearly 1.8 million pensioners in the country, which rises to 2.2 million if retired civil servants are included. The total population in 2010 was 10.8 million.

The retirement age for both men and women is 65 years with at least 30 years
