A nine-foot sculpture of South African statesman Nelson Mandela is to be placed facing the British Parliament buildings in Parliament Square. Commissioned on behalf of the Mandela Statue Fund by South African journalist and anti-apartheid campaigner the late Donald Woods, the monument is the work of Ian Walters (1931-2006), who completed the clay model just before his death. Currently being cast in bronze, the statue of Mandela will be installed alongside Winston Churchill, Benjamin Disraeli, Sir Robert Peel and Field Marshall Smuts later this year.
