Ground has been broken for the construction of the first ever mosque in what used to be east Berlin. The domed structure on the site of an old sauerkraut factory in the suburb of Heinersdorf in the Pankow district is being built by the minority Muslim Ahmadiyya community to replace its current premises in the west Berlin suburb of Reinickendorf, which have become too small.
