Madrid city council has announced that it has posthumously stripped former Spanish ruler and military dictator General Francisco Franco of all honours it bestowed on him during the time of his rule, from 1939 to his death in 1975.

According to news agency AFP the vote, announced on 29 June, was unanimous among the three political parties that make up the council. Franco was given the titles of honorary mayor and Adopted Son of Madrid in 1964, and medals of gold and honour in 1942 and 1959.

The move was proposed by Izquierda Unida (IU) party, to ensure that Madrid complies with Spain
