Using the slogan "Por favor, adptame", Barcelona city council public health board (ASPB) has launched a press campaign to encourage people to adopt abandoned dogs and cats. Due to a new law for the protection of animals, pets may no longer be put down in local council centres and Barcelona dog pound is risking serious overcrowding. Last year in Catalonia around 130 pets were abandoned each day over the months of July and August. The campaign also provides information on adoption procedures: for 16.50 the prospective adopter receives a pet with a certificate stating that the animal has been wormed, vaccinated, sterilized and identified with a microchip. For more information, the Centre dAcollimento dAnimals de Companyia can be contacted on 934 284417 and 934 283125 or by visiting the website
