Torné Esquius: Poetics of the Everyday

7 April-9 July. Pere Torné Esquius (1879- 1936) was a painter, illustrator and cartoonist whose work defies categorisation although he is sometimes claimed by the noucentista, a Catalan modernist movement active in the early 20th century.

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya examines the diverse career of the artist whose paintings contained elements of primitivism and his preferred subject matter included interiors and secluded spaces, such as quiet gardens or humble living rooms.

However Torné Esquius also produced landscapes and portraits, while his professional career saw him illustrate children's literature, literary texts and satirical cartoons in magazines.
