17 22 August 2005. Every five years Amsterdam hosts this unforgettable maritime event that brings around twenty Tall Ships into the waters of the Amsterdam harbour, along with hundreds of classic sailing and motorboats. All of Amsterdam celebrates the event with firwork displays on the waterfront, concerts, street theatre and much more. This year, as well as the naval parade of Tall Ships from around the world, the traditional Dutch fleet of historic ships will also be plying the harbour waters, along with 2 vessels from the Royal Dutch navy. In keeping with the events theme: the maritime link between past, present and future, the 2005 event sees the inclusion of modern vessels, like the stylish all-wooden Italian speedboats from the famous Riva boatyards and yachts from the Americas Cup race. There will be something for the space-age technology enthusiasts as well as for those who appreciate the finer points of the square-rigged wind-jammers of days gone by. The last day of Sail Amsterdam is traditionally the highlight of the event with a parade of historical ships, followed by music performed by various orchestras and the Royal Marines Band and a final spectacular display of fireworks.
