18 Sept 2005. This years Dam tot Damloop marks the 21st edition of this popular annual running event. With over 30,000 participants and up to 200,000 spectators expected it is also the largest in the Netherlands. The course is run over ten miles from Amsterdam city centre, passing through the IJ-tunnel, to the centre of Zaandam. As well as the enthusiastic crowds there will also be a musical accompaniment. Athletes leave in groups from Dam Square from 11.50 onwards the finishing line for all races is on the Peperstraat, in the centre of Zaandam. Only members of athletics organizations may take part in the run, and all those who make it to the finish receive a special souvenir and a bottle of AA Drink, while the first three to cross the finishing line win a total of 11,000 in prize-money. There is a Mini Dam tot Damloop for children, which takes place in the centre of Zaandam, with 4,000 kids participating this year.
