28 Sept-30 Nov 2006. Viennas Raimund Theatre hosts Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levays adaptation of Daphne du Mauriers popular 1938 novel Rebecca directed by American Francesca Zambello and designed by Peter J. Davison (of Jesus Christ Superstar fame). The story opens in an elegant hotel in 1920s Monte Carlo where the protagonist, the youthful paid companion of a wealthy American heiress, is swept off her feet by the brooding aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter. After a whirlwind courtship they marry and return to de Winters ancestral home Manderley on the coast of Cornwall. There the housekeeper Mrs Danvers has kept alive the spirit of her former mistress, Rebecca, and resents the intrusion of the new Mrs de Winter. Rebeccas ghost is everywhere and the dark secret of her death is destined to overshadow the newlyweds happiness. Maxim de Winter is played by popular German musical star Uwe Krger, with Wietske Van Tangeren as his new wife. Dutch actress Susan Rigvava-Dumas excels in the role of the malicious Mrs Danvers. Admission Fri & Sat nights 95-10. Other performances 72-10. Tues-Sat 19.30 Sun 18.00. Matinee 18 Nov at 15.00.
