25 Oct 2006-16 Jun 2007. First performed at La Scala in Milan in 1887, Giuseppe Verdis opera in four acts based on Shakespeares tragedy Othello comes to the Vienna State Opera in a new production directed by Christine Mielitz and conducted by Daniele Gatti. The international cast of stars includes Johan Botha from South Africa in the title role, with Bulgarian-born soprano Krassimira Stoyanova as his wife Desdemona, while Iago is played by German baritone Falk Struckmann. Set in Cyprus under Venetian rule in the 16th century, the opera recounts the tragic tale of suspicion, jealousy, revenge and murder set in motion by the scheming of one of Othellos subordinates, Iago, who is bent on avenging a missed promotion. Othello runs 2 hours 50 mins with one interval. Admission 178-10. Performances start at 19.00 on 25 & 30 Oct, 3, 7, 11 Nov 2006 and 31 May, 4, 8, 12, 16 Jun 2007.
