3 Dec 2005-4 Jun 2006. An exhibition dedicated to Dublin-born artist, Evie Hone (1894-1955) marking the 50th anniversary of her death is being held by the National Gallery of Ireland. Around 25 of Hones works, which reflect the various phases of her artistic development, have been drawn together by the gallery from public and private collections around Ireland. After her studies in England under Walter Sickert and in France with Andr Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she and her lifelong friend, Mainie Jellett, returned to Ireland for their first Dublin exhibition in 1924 at the Dublin Painters Gallery. Although the exhibition was not a success, it immediately placed the two artists at the forefront of the modern art movement in Ireland. In the 1930s, the abstract style of Hones compositions evolved to include more figurative and landscape scenes but the crucial development was toward the stained-glass works for which she has become famous. From 1931 until her death in 1955 she produced over 50 works in this medium, of which the most acclaimed is the enormous eighteen-light window depicting The Crucifixion and the Last Supper at Eton College Chapel. The exhibition has been curated by Dr. Sghle Bhreathnach-Lynch, who is also the author of the accompanying illustrated brochure. Lectures on the life and art of Evie Hone are to be held throughout Feb 2006 on Tuesdays at 10.30 and Sundays at 15.00 at the gallery. Admission to the exhibition and lectures is free. Brochure 2.
