29 May-14 Jun 2009. The annual Madrid Book Fair is held in the much-loved Parque del Buen Retiro, the city's green heart and genuine 'retreat' from the stress of city life. As well as countless copies of classic titles on offer, the fair has thousands of very rare books for sale. Included too are round-table discussions and literary conferences, presentations, book signings and special guest appearances.

The Parque del Buen Retiro is 350 acre estate founded by Queen Isabella I over 500 years ago. One of Madrid's premier attractions, the park is full to the brim with fountains and sculpture and contains a large, serene lake. A sombre feature of the park is the 'Forest of the Departed', a memorial monument to commemorate the 191 victims of the 11 March 2004 terrorist attack in Madrid. The park hosts many events during the year, the book fair being one of the highlights on its cultural calendar. Admission is free.
