26 June-19 July 2006. Madrids Teatro Real presents a revival of this popular three-act operetta composed by Federico Moreno Torroba in a co-production with the Washington National Opera and the Los Angeles Opera, directed by Emilio Sagi. Set in 1868, with the court of Queen Isabel II under threat of a revolutionary uprising, the story revolves around Luisa, daughter of a palace clerk, and her two suitors on different sides of the political divide: Javier Moreno, a monarchist soldier and Vidal Hernando, a wealthy landowner with republican sympathies. First seen at Madrids Teatro Caldern in 1932, Luisa Fernanda, is one of the last great romantic zarzuelas.

In this production the part of Vidal is shared by Placido Domingo and ngel dena, while Luisa Fernanda is played by Mara Jos Montiel and Nancy Herrera. The libretto is by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernndez Shaw. Musical direction is by Jess Lpez Cobos. Admission 136-15. Performances at 20.00 on 26 & 28 June, 1, 3, 11-15, 18 & 19 July. Matinee at 18.00 on 16 July.
