13 Nov-4 Dec 2006. Gaetano Donizettis famous tragic opera Lucia di Lammermoor comes to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in a production by the Opernhaus Zrich, directed by Robert Carsen. Based on Sir Walter Scotts The Bride of Lammermoor, the opera is set in 16th-century Scotland against a backdrop of religious feuding between the Catholic partisans of Mary Stuart and the Protestant supporters of her son James. Lucia (Miss Lucy Ashton) is secretly in love with the family enemy Sir Edgar of Ravenswood (Edgardo), but her brother Enrico forces her to marry another. Convinced of Edgardos infidelity, Lucia goes mad and stabs her new husband on their marriage bed. This production stars Edita Gruberova and Patrizia Ciofi as Lucia, with Josep Bros and Giuseppe Filianoti sharing the role of Edgardo. Richard Hudson designed the sets and costumes. Musical direction is shared by Josep Caball and Antonello Allemandi. Lucia di Lammermoor was first performed in Naples in 1835. The libretto is by Salvatore Cammarano.
