28 April-28 May 2006. First performed at the Teatro Tvoli de Barcelona in May 1936, this new production of the popular operetta La Tabernera del Porto is directed by Luis Olmos. Telling the story of a sailors romance, this zarzuela by Pablo Sorozbal set in the Basque country is rich in seedy characters, dramatic situations and spectacular stage effects. Marola, the pretty tavern-keeper of a harbourside inn on the north coast of Spain is courted by Leandro, a young sailor, but their love is severely tested by the interference of Marolas father, a dangerous pirate, a gang of cocaine smugglers, an alcoholic Englishman and a storm at sea. Musical direction is by Manuel Galduf, with the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid and the Chorus of the Teatro de La Zarzuela. The cast includes Jos Bros, Albert Montserrat, Ivn Gmez, Marta Moreno, Mara Rodrguez and Juan Jess Rodrguez. Admission 115-12. Performances Weds-Sun at 20.00. Matinees 30 April, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 May at 18.00.
