Idea: Painting-Force: The Hinge Between the 1970s and 1980s

The artists in this exhibition at Palazzo Velázquez took as their starting point concepts such as academia and tradition but developed them as a source of contemporary energy instead of a viewing them as outdated dogma.

The works on display date from 1978 to 1984 and are by Alfonso Albacete, Miguel Ángel Campano, Ferran Garcia Sevilla, Juan Navarro Baldeweg and Manolo Quejido.

The five Spanish artists swam against the avant-garde tide sweeping through art institutions and modern art thinking of the late 1970s, by looking to earlier representatives of Europe’s historical avant-garde movements for inspiration: artists such as Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, or North American artists such as De Kooning, Motherwell, and Johns.
