25 Sept 2008-19 Jan 2009. This retrospective is dedicated to the German expressionism, which is still relatively unknown in France, and it pays homage for the first time in this country to Emil Nolde, one of the main representatives of the movement. This exhibition brings together in a chronological and thematic order 90 paintings, among which is The Life of Christ, and 70 watercolours, engravings and drawings by the German artist, coming from various collections around the world. Nolde is known for his vigorous brushwork and expressive choice of coluors, such as his golden yellows and deep reds, which give a luminous touch to otherwise somber tones. His watercolours include vivid, brooding storm-scapes and brilliant florals.
