29 May17 June 2005. In a repeat of one of its most celebrated productions, Teatro Real hosts 'Don Carlo', directed by Hugo de Ana. Devotees will recognise the keen and gifted imagination of Hugo de Ana, which has never failed to shock in previous productions in the capital. For some his style is too controversial, but others see him as a genius of the superespectculo. De Ana pushes opera to its limits, creating powerful new approaches by overturning conventions: weaving deep social questions into visually stunning performances. In any case, this is Verdi at his most political, exploring the rich crossroads between love and power, politics and religion. For all these reasons, the opera is as topical as ever.
