16-19 December 2010. The historic centre of the city of Deventer, some 90km outside Amsterdam, provides the backdrop for the Dickens Festival.

Up to 1000 people dress as characters from the much-loved classics by the 19th-century British writer Charles Dickens. More recognisable figures like Ebenezer Scrooge, Bill Sykes, Mr Pickwick and Oliver Twist mingle with groups of costumed Christmas carollers, orphans, pickpockets and gentry.

Roasted chestnuts and punch add to the London Victorian era atmosphere enjoyed annually by 160,000 people at the three day festival. The Deventer Theatre presents the musical 'A Christmas Carol' and a Christmas fair is held in the Grote or Lebu
