Until 4 Sept 2005. This mini-retrospective on US sculptor Catherine Lee focuses on her work from the past decade. The exhibition follows her transition to pure three-dimensional space in terms of material, colour and form. A hybrid of painting, sculpture and installation, Lees work contrasts simple repeated forms with rich materials, like wax, bronze, glass and fibreglass. The show includes small wall-mounted polychromatic pieces such as Other Voices (1993), large-scale sculptures like Hebrides (2003), hand-patinated bronzes such as the imposing Sybilla (2000), and the elegant raku-fired ceramic in the Cubic series. Though her work has always been purely abstract in form, Lee explains how stone circles in Ireland, African masks, and American-Indian pictographs are all to varying degrees abstract to us, simply because we dont fully know their original significance; and yet, they are potent as art objects.
