About 250,000 expats live in Belgium, most of them in Brussels, and 97 per cent of them use English as their main language, according to research by the Flemish Free University of Brussels (VUB).

The research also found that the expats do not use Dutch (Flemish) spoken in the Flanders part of Belgium although about 50,000 live in the Flemish-speaking areas surrounding Brussels.

VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussels) is one of the six Flemish universities in Belgium with undergraduate and post-graduate facilities. It is organised into eight faculties with an emphasis on research.
