Electricity price rises in Jersey will rise by 24 per cent next year.

The Jersey Electricity Company said that it had been forced to increase prices from 1 January because of soaring wholesale energy costs and a poor exchange rate with Europe. Jersey buys most of its electricity from France only a few miles from the island.

The announcement comes just weeks after the price of gas and coal in the island had both risen by 20 per cent.
