Modern Times: Photography in the 20th Century

The Rijksmuseum stages its first major photography exhibition to inaugurate its recently renovated Philips Wing, as part of its remodernisation programme.

On show are more than 400 images tracing key developments in photography during the 20th century, including the introduction of colour, the advent of documentary and news photography, and photography as an art medium. The exhibition also examines the role of photography in fashion and advertising, and includes numerous rare images.

Since deciding in 1994 to extend its photographic collection beyond the 19th century, the museum has amassed 20,000 images from the 20th century.
