Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Berlin has become the fastest growing tourist destination in Europe. Last year more than 17 million people visited the city, eight million up on numbers during the 1990s and over one million more than in 2006. Presenting the latest figures, Berlin Tourismus Marketing GmbH president Hanns-Peter Nerger predicted a 3.5 percent increase in tourist numbers for 2008 with overnight stays reaching 20 million by 2010. 2,500 more hotel beds are to be made available over the next 18 months to cope with the expected influx.
