Rail commuters had a lucky escape when a potentially serious rail tragedy was averted as a viaduct collapsed into North Dublin's Broadmeadow estuary, between Malahide and Donabate.

The incident involved the collapse of some 20 metres of the viaduct and took place minutes after an evening train carrying 50 passengers passed over it. The driver noticed to his horror that the embankment had begun to give way behind him and immediately raised the alarm at Malahide station.
