14-16 Oct. Many of Dublin’s museums, libraries, galleries and contemporary buildings to which there is normally limited public access are open free of charge over the weekend of 14-16 October.
The Irish Architecture Foundation presents over 100 tours and events, with visits ranging from the home of Ireland’s department of foreign affairs at Iveagh House and the president’s residence at Aras an Uachtaráin, to the central bus station Busárus and Facebook’s International Headquarters.
Perhaps the most poignant appointment however is the AIB Bankcentre, designed by prominent Irish architect Andy Devane (1917-2000). The Open House tours may be the last occasion for people to see this landmark building in Ballsbridge as, despite numerous appeals, planners have recently approved its demolition.
The majority of tours operate on a first-come, first-served basis, however several require advance booking or operate on a lottery system due to restricted numbers, security or the sensitive nature of the buildings involved.
