Magical Books: From the Middle Ages to Middle-earth

For its summer exhibition the Bodleian celebrates children's fantasy literature with a display of original documents relating to some of the genre's foremost modern exponents, such as C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Susan Cooper, Alan Garner and Philip Pullman. All were members of the writers' group known informally as the "Oxford School".

The library delves into its extensive collections to present a magical selection of papers, the highlights of which include Tolkien's original illustrations for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; and C.S. Lewis’s map of Narnia.

Fittingly, the library scenes in the Harry Potter movies were filmed at the Bodleian Library.

Mon-Fri 09.00-17.00, Sat 09.00-16.30, Sun 11.00-17.00.
