Fragonard in Love: Suitor and Libertine

16 Sept-24 Jan. The Musée du Luxembourg examines the legacy of French painter and printmaker Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), a leading exponent of the late Rococo manner in the mid-18th century.

Exhibition organisers say that the atmosphere of this "era of seduction, love and intrigue" was perfectly captured by the artist who placed sensuality and emotion at the heart of his work which was characterised by exuberance and hedonism.

The exhibition focuses on Fragonard's mid-18th century work during a time when the Age of the Enlightment became profoundly influenced by the emerging Romanticism movement.

In 1750 the Musée du Luxembourg became the first French museum to be opened to the public.
