Farbenrausch. Masterpieces of German Expressionism

9 Oct-11 Jan. German Expressionism is celebrated at the Leopold Museum with an exhibition comprising around 30 portrait paintings and 80 works on paper from the collection of the Osthaus Museum in Hagen, Germany.

The show, whose title means "craze of colours", includes works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, founding members of the expressionist Brücke art movement in Dresden in 1905.

The movement's paintings and prints were defined by their intense colour, pictorial flatness, bold outlines and distorted, angular portraits.

The colourful exhibition also includes paintings by other German Expressionist movements such as the Neue Künstlervereinigung München and the Blauer Reiter, with works by Gabriele Münter, Alexej von Jawlensky and Franz Marc.

The show is supplemented with works from the Leopold Museum's collection, by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke.
