Disfarmer: The vintage prints

18 March-5 June. American studio photographer Mike Disfarmer (1884-1959) only began to gain international recognition two decades after his death but today he is considered a master of classic American portrait photography.

Between 1915 and 1959 Disfarmer documented the inhabitants of Heber Springs, a small town in rural Arkansas, from farmers and housewives to soldiers and high-school football players. Disfarmer's work practice was simple but effective: his models were positioned against a plain black or white background and asked to look directly into the camera.

This retrospective at FOAM comprises 182 original photographs including several that have never been displayed in public.
