Beyond Caravaggio

12 Oct-15 Jan. The National Gallery hosts Britain's first major exhibition exploring the influence of Caravaggio's art on the work of his contemporaries and successors.

For several decades following his death in 1610, aged 39, Caravaggio's works were highly sought after. However they began to fall out of fashion from the mid-17th century and the artist's accomplishments were not fully recognised for almost 300 years.

The exhibition is the result of collaboration between the national galleries in London and Dublin, and the National Galleries of Scotland.

It comprises works by Caravaggio and the Italian, French, Flemish, Dutch and Spanish artists he inspired, examining the so-called Caravaggism phenomenon.
