The Ville de Paris is taking steps to minimize the negative side-effects of the total smoking ban in public spaces which became law throughout France on 1 January 2008 as smokers are forced out onto the streets. A special council dispensation has been made for the installation of portable ashtrays in order to prevent an accumulation of cigarette butts on pavements outside clubs, discotheques, restaurants and bars. Over 100,000 information postcards are to be distributed in Parisian establishments, while specially made pocket ashtrays will be handed out at the doors of four of the city
