After having managed the Abbey Theatre in Dublin for the last 101 years, the National Theatre Society, formed in 1903 with WB Yeats as president, is now history. The financial and management crisis at the Abbey, which came to a head earlier this year, when the Irish aarts minister, John ODonoghue, threatened to withdraw government funding.

The old governing body has nw been replaced by Abbey Theatre Limited with a new board governing board. This change at the top has ensured the continuation of arts council financial support and has cleared the way for government approval of the Abbeys transfer to a new site in the Dublin docklands. The new venue will cover 4,700 square metres and is less than half a kilometre from the Abbeys current site.
