London Transport has launched a pilot scheme in Walthamstow, north London, as part of an effort against crime on public transport in the capital. The project is called Travelsafe and will see the Metropolitan Police and the British Transport Police working together to prevent crime on the London transport network. There will be more officers patrolling the bus and underground stations, and hidden cctv cameras will be installed. The project will have a second phase in 2006, in another part of the borough. The aim of the project is to test the usefulness of heavy policing and to see if an expanded police presence should be extended throughout the London transport network.
