Ron Hickman, creator of the Black and Decker Workmate, has died in Jersey following several months of serious illness.

Hickman (78) moved to Jersey in `1977 following huge success with his Do It Yourself invention, which sold more than 60 million units worldwide.

He also designed the Lotus Elan, a low-slung sports car that spawned many limitations and revived the fortunes of the car company.

The inventor, who lived in St Brelade, in a house he had designed, had been ill for several months.
