Roughly 10,000 people took to the streets of Copenhagen on 19 April in protest against tough new anti-smoking legislation in the country. They also presented a 61,000-signature petition to politicians at the Christiansborg Palace expressing opposition to the law which will see smoking banned in establishments larger than 40 sqm and require businesses to build special smoking rooms among other things. More than 300 bars, which will be hardest hit by the legislation, have formally joined the protest. The new law is due to come into effect across Denmark on 25 Aug 2007.
