A programme of walking tours of Oxford university celebrating its famous African and Afro-Caribbean ex-alumni has been set up using a 45,900 Lottery grant. The black heritage tours are the brainchild of Pamela Roberts, who helps run Oxfords International Black Media Festival. Focussing on the likes of John Kufuor, president of Ghana, Raymond Robinson, prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago, and the jazz saxophonist Soweto Kinch, the tours aim to correct the one-sided view provided by current tours which centre on famous former students like Harold Macmillan, CS Lewis and Lawrence of Arabia. The first black heritage tour is to be launched at the Oxford Museum of Natural History on 5 Oct. Money from the Heritage Lottery fund will also help finance an exhibition, a DVD and a book on Oxfords past black alumni.
