Even more of Oxford is now under CCTV surveillance, as newly installed cameras were switched on in the Blackbird Leys area of the city. The area is one of the largest council estates in Europe and has been cited by Oxford city council as in the top 10 per cent of the most deprived areas in the UK.

The cameras were installed in two areas on the estate after campaigning by the local Neighbourhood Action Group, which complained of rising anti-social behaviour and street crime. Thames Valley Police will monitor the cameras continually. Saj Malik, councillor for safer communities, said in a statement:
